Identification of a taxi
The customer is always right – but does he know his rights?

How do you take a taxi ?

First of all, you have to learn to recognise a real Brussels taxi, without getting it wrong.
How?

By identifying the sign on the roof of the vehicle.
In the jargon this is known as the ‘sputnik’.It bears the letters T - A - X - I in red on a white background, with the yellow iris on a blue background – the symbol of the Brussels-Capital Region - above it. In addition, a Brussels taxi is usually black or white.

Where can you find a Brussels taxi ?

There are three possibilities:

1. either you can phone a taxi firm or a radio exchange, which will send you a vehicle.
2. or you can go to a nearby taxi rank
3. or you can hail a taxi in the street by signalling to the driver (but only if you are more than 100 meters from a taxi rank).

Finally, check that the taxi has a taximeter  linked to a printer and that the prices are clearly indicated.

How much does it cost?

Of course, the price depends on the distance between the place where you take the taxi and the place where you leave it.

In addition, the fare applicable depends on the customer’s final destination.Rate I applies within the limits of the territory corresponding to the 19 communes of the Brussels-Capital Region, and the driver switches to this rate if the customer wishes to be set down within this area.

The rates applicable in the Brussels-Capital Region
! New tariffs on 10/03/2008
!

Pick-up charge: € 2,40

Rate I (within the 19 communes of the Brussels-Capital Region):  1,35/km

Rate II (outside the 19 communes):2,70/km

Waiting fee  :25,00 per hour (1)

Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. customers are charged a flat rate supplement of € 2,00 (the taximeter is fitted with a clock-calendar that registers this flat-rate supplement automatically).

(1)   Waiting time: the taximeter automatically switches to waiting time if the tax is driving at less than 20 km/h, for example in traffic jams, at red lights, etc.

Here are the communes of the Brussels-Capital Region that mark its boundary :

1. Anderlecht
2. Auderghem
3. Berchem-Sainte-Agathe
4. Brussels (Laeken, Neder-Over-Heembeek, Haren)
5. Etterbeek
6. Evere
7. Forest
8. Ganshoren
9. Ixelles
10. Jette
11. Koekelberg
12. Molenbeek-Saint-Jean
13. Saint-Gilles
14. Saint-Josse-Ten-Noode
15. Schaarbeek
16. Uccle
17. Watermael-Boitsfort
18. Woluwé-Saint-Lambert
19. Woluwé-Saint-Pierre

At the edge of the boundary, Rate II (= double rate) is only applied if the customer asks to be taken outside these limits. The driver is therefore obliged to check the customers’ final destination before switching to rate II. The driver switches to this double rate as soon as he crosses the limit of the 19 communes, that is as soon as he passes the panel indicating the end of the Brussels-Capital Region.

How many are there?

There are over 900 operators and 4,500 drivers for a total of 1,300 vehicles, while the number of customers they carry is beyond calculation. Some taxis are linked to a telephone exchange.

And where are they parked?

There are over 800 taxi ranks at the disposal of Brussels taxis. Most of these are located in the city centre and around strategic points. Here is a complete list of locations  (list currently being updated)
